To support the London Borough of Wandsworth’s commitment to accessibility and compliance with the Equalities Act, a key council building required its doors to be automated. However, as a listed building featuring a mix of Italianate and French Renaissance styles from 1882, the challenge was to modernise access without altering the historical aesthetic. Entec delivered a bespoke solution—retrofitting automation to the original wooden doors while preserving their character and ensuring access for all.
Project Overview
Wandsworth Council needed to improve accessibility without compromising the historical integrity of the building’s entrance. Entec worked closely with a specialist joinery contractor to refurbish the doors and install automation in a way that blended seamlessly with the existing design.
Challenge
The building was designed in a mixture of the Italianate and French Renaissance styles, built and completed in 1882. As a listed building, the existing doors needed to be preserved but were not fit or safe for automatic operation in their current state.
Solution
Entec worked with a specialist joinery contractor to refurbish the doors and install bespoke timber packers to accommodate the door automation. The automatic operators were powder-coated to blend in with the wood, and timber grain effect trunking was used to run cables between the operators—ensuring the aesthetic of the space was maintained. We fitted black roller blind finger guard protection to each of the door leaves to ensure safety compliance.
